Super fun shoot. Interesting to note, this was the 1st time I have photographed using a colored backdrop. I've always used white/grey/black in the past. I will be doing this more often. Also, the compression of this blog seems to have screwed with the saturation of some of the colors, especially the blues ... just so you know.

Lastly, if anyone ever wants to shoot, send me a private message here or else where. Thanks for looking!
I am enjoying this project quite a bit. I need to get out and shoot some more. These were all shot with Fuji Neopan 400 ISO using a Canon F-1n paired with either a 50mm 1.4 or 20mm 2.8.

As with everything, we will see where this takes me.JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125810004364865239.post-37088020420983325942013-09-13T08:47:00.000-07:002013-09-13T08:47:22.403-07:00Inwood III got a couple of rolls of film back the other day, here are a couple of the highlights. Everything was shot on Ilford HP5 black and white film. His name is Chuc Nyguen. Chuc was one of first photographers that I met at college that really blew me away. his work was amazing. I met him in the darkroom at Orange Coast College, it was my first semester there and I was just learning to print black and white. He was in a corner of the dark room by himself and I watched him as he did what appeared to be magic motions under the light of his enlarger. I was intrigued. He printed extremely dark, burning out everything that was irrelevant. He was also was a lover of printing on warm toned paper, he always had a box of the Illford variety with him. He showed me his prints and I was instantly in awe of his talent. He was far above what I even thought was possible. Even now looking back his prints are astonishing. Since his passing, I have searched the net to find what I could, but unfortunately there is not a whole lot out there. He was not into social media and barely made a blip on the internet. If anyone out there has a source where you can view his images online, that would be amazing. I have a couple that I can share.

The first is a way too small to do it justice, it is a too small sample of his fashion photography. The 2nd is from a series of photographs he did on the homeless in Los Angeles.
Eventually we became pretty good friends. We talked a lot at school. He worked in the labs there, and we went on several photo adventures together. The most memorable was a trip out to the Salton Sea that the two of us undertook. He was socially awkward, but it was in a really good way. He came with me to parties with my circle of friends and he seamlessly would blend in and even steal the show even though if you were to look at us, you would wonder what we had in common, he was an obvious outsider that was incredible welcome. He was just able to do that. I don't know much about his life choices over the last few years, but I know he had problems. Only Chuc could tell you why he took his life, but it hurts me to know that he felt he had no other choice than to do it. I know this is a feeling that is shared by his family and all of his friends, most of them were probably knew him much better than I. I'll miss you Chuc. This has been a little bit of a rough year, friend #3 to go out, and all of them have been too young.
Self portraits are not something I usually do, but I needed something new to put onto my website and in other places where a picture of me is needed. The old picture I was using is almost 5 years old, and the other picture I tend to use is something like 25 years old. Can you guess which is which?
Yes, my apartment (studio!), in New York. With some clever rearrangements (stacking couches and shoving them onto one side, removing bike racks, etc) I was able to clear just enough room out to fit a seamless and a couple lights. Yes, I will be doing this more often, and hopefully even improving on the set up. Pleased? Why yes I am.

Backdrop, is in place. I am using knuckles attached to 40" arms to make my stands into sort of mini booms. Keeps me from having to move the stands around too much in the limited amount of space.

Backdrop rolled out and ready to go. I started out using an umbrella as my key, but I abandoned this pretty quickly due to the lack of light control. In small spaces umbrellas just spill everywhere making it really hard to get a nice directional light.
Dolly Would's Garth character.

I switched to a 24x36 soft box just about right away. Much better directional light, especially after it has been gridded. Soft light that is still directional enough to provide good contrast on her and attractive shadows on the backdrop. I have a 2nd light that is set up with a 7" reflector with a grid to provide some fill on her face.
Dolly Would's duechy male alter ego. Check out the music that served as her influence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAPMgrxnaOc Dolly spent 6 years living in the Boston area, and another 3 living in Orange County, California. I wonder if this effected the development of this character at all?

I lit these with a single light, 7" reflector gridded to control light spill. This gave a really hard light that accented the character, by gridding it I was able to control the light spill and get a nice vignette on the backdrop. I placed the light using a boom directly in front and raised it a bit higher than usual to cast a hard shadow over her face.

This is Dolly's Wizard Of Oz character. It is meant as a conceptual piece that she custom designed for a show she performed in about a month ago. This character is a bit unusual for her being that Dolly is more known for her satire and comedy. She designed it as a challenge to herself to push her boundaries in new directions.

I lit this using my soft box at a 3/4 position, once again it was gridded to prevent light from spilling off in every direction. This gave her a nice soft look, but it had just a little too much contrast with just the soft box so I grabbed a reflector and mounted that using a kit stand, knuckle and 40" arm. My 2nd light was mounted to my boom and used as a hair light with its 7" reflector and grid.

It is always a challenge shooting in a small place, especially if you are shooting studio shots. Simply making room for a backdrop and lights is a challenge! It is another challenge to control the light, and even then you sometimes forget you have to find someplace for you to shoot from without distorting the model! I was lucky enough to have just enough room.

Everything was shot using a Canon 5D and either a 17-40 f/4 or 70-200 f/4.
A little bit about it I suppose, Inwood is the northern most neighborhood on the island of Manhattan (Marble Hill is the farthest north in the borough) it is home to Inwood Hill park, and is mostly populated by immigrants from the Dominican Republic. I started photographing in Inwood a few weeks ago as an exercise in black and white photography to reacquaint myself with film. I have a larger project that is in my head, and I am not sure of which black and white film I will be shooting it with. I also feel that living in Washington Heights, I have such great access to Inwood it would be a shame not to photograph something there! It reminds me a lot of Santa Ana except in a much more isolated form, while Santa Ana was smack dab in the middle of everything, Inwood is extremely isolated. Broadway is the only major street that connects it with Washington Heights, while Harlem River Dr and the Henry Hudson Pkwy are the highways on the east and west sides. This is a small neighborhood, and I mean this to be a small and somewhat brief project, but you know how things like that go. All of a sudden you have shot a couple thousand pictures and your somewhat brief project is taking a year to complete.
The photographs were shot in a small NYC jewelry studio, space was limited. I shot with two lights against a white backdrop. I shot using my Canon 50D with 17-40 f/4L and 70-200 f/4L.
you plan on any formal photography training? What specialization are you
shooting for? What steps are you taking to make your goal into reality? What
sorts of successes have you had? Have you had any formal business classes?

My own answer:

I can answer my own question for number 2 to get the ball
rolling ;). I am currently working on making the transition to working within
the photography industry full time. I have been working on the outskirts for a
decade now. I have managed two portrait studios, worked for two camera stores, helped
to run an art gallery, and worked as a large format printer for a major
consumer level print company. One of my current long term goals is to
transition into assisting commercial and fashion photographers, as well as
working directly with the studios (even longer term goal would be transitioning
into shooting). I want to have the freedom to photograph my personal
documentary projects while earning a living and satisfying my technical side
within the studios working directly with commercial and fashion photographers.
Being a door knocker, that has been my main strategy in the last couple of
months. I made a list of every major studio in Manhattan and have been showing
up at their front doors. I am now on the roster for several studios, and once a
week I try to go out and make a couple more contacts. I am also directly
emailing commercial and fashion photographers every day. I try to go through
ten or so a day. I am not as consistent as I would like to be, but I try. On the consumer level I am not quite as
active, but I definitely have a contingency plan for it if the studios and
direct emailing does not work out. I am building a client list from the
photography shoots that I do through the camera store that I work at. I also
have several hundred coupons printed that I can hand directly out to potential
clients. My hope is to simply stalk the play grounds in some of the nicer
neighborhoods and hope something eventually works out. As far as school goes; I
earned two certificates in photography. The first is as a still photographer,
and the second is for a digital lab tech. The goal of the program I went
through is to set you up with the education required to enter into commercial
or fashion photography as a photographer’s assistant. This is exactly what I am
trying to do with it. I went through a very good jr college program in Southern
California. It definitely covered all of the bases for basics, but I still feel
that it was lacking. Many of the students that graduate from the program will
move onto an art school of some type, Art Center in Pasadena is a popular
choice. I can definitely understand this move! If I had the cash, I may have
done the same thing! Unfortunately, I was not born rich, not even close to it,
so I what I currently have is all I can currently afford. I would love more
education, but I feel that what I got was adequate if I can get proper on the
job training. One of the things that I loved about my school was that it gave
me a very solid background in black and white film in all formats. I feel that
I may be the last generation of photography students to receive this type of
education. Emphasis on getting the shot
right in the camera and minimizing your time spent in post. One of the classes
that I took was business photography. It has been the only business class I
have taken, and it was actually incredibly valuable! Business is a side of
photography that is almost always lost! Again, I felt like it just covered the
basics, and in the future I may want to take some more business classes.

Wow! I really didn’t think that would turn into an essay!
Any advice is appreciated. Also, a great magazine I discovered is http://resourcemagonline.com/.

I rode the 1 train from Washington Heights to Midtown,
service had partially resumed earlier in the day. I was going to see something
that I may not ever get to see again; Lower Manhattan in Darkness. The last stop
was 42nd, I carried my bike up two flights of stairs and I was off
into the unusually cold November 1st night. I crossed over to
Broadway and turned south. The lights of the city faded to black, the only
light coming from the tail lights of the taxis that I followed. The flat Iron
building began to take shape.

NOHO, SOHO, TriBeCa, West Village, Lower East Side, it was
all black. Not a single light. The only light came from the passing taxies and
police cars. It was incredibly eerie, but also peaceful. Standing on Greenwich St.
in TriBeCa, it was actually possible to really feel the city. Without the
hustle and bustle of the nightlife, without the bright city lights that never
turn off, the aura of the city was overwhelming. Had I energy, I could have
stayed out all night. ¾ of a million people were without power in Lower Manhattan.
The subways were completely down. Staten Island got hit really hard, as did
parts of Brooklyn. Parts of the Jersey shore is pretty much gone judging from
the photos I have seen. Still, It could have been a whole heck of a lot worse.
There are so many people right now all over the city working ridiculous hours
to things back to normal. The power to Lower Manhattan was supposed to come
back on today; the trains were back up in limited service just one day after. Right
now there is even a train to Brooklyn running. I am incredibly thankful that I
live in an area that was not heavily affected.

I am more in tuned with the philosophy that the best camera available is the one that I already have. Regardless, I did pull out the newish Canon 40mm 2.8 pancake lens this weekend. I just picked up a new body and wanted to snap some shots at a burlesque show on Friday to test out ISO capabilities. I wanted to grab the 35 1.4 L, but I was denied access to that lens for an entire weekend, so I grabbed the far less expensive 40mm 2.8.

1st impressions of it were great. It is tiny, so small that my camera felt awkward almost like shooting with one of my home made pin hole lenses. On the bright side though, it fit in my man bag with ridiculous ease! While still larger than my G12, it is nowhere the size it normally is when fitted with my 24-70. 40mm is a really unique focal length. I feel Canon really thought it out, and made an intelligent decision. This is a full frame lens, but it is primarily marketed for their aps-c cameras. This really gives it an unusual edge, it becomes a perfectly usable normal aspect at 60 on aps-c and a slightly wide normal lens on a full frame. It works well with both uses. Smart.

2nd impressions were not so hot. The auto focus, while super smooth, is definitely not fast. No big deal, a good chance to test out my cameras Al Servo AF mode, and it actually out worked really well. Tracked the dancers very smoothly, no moments of hunting or getting lost in the background. I was shooting at 3200 ISO and roughly 1/125th of a second, yet my shots all looked soft. The light was horrible, but this is how I normally shoot. The only time I shoot in good light is when I create it myself. The subjects I like are always lit horribly! So a lens that performs well in low light is a must. At this point I was wishing I could have grabbed the 35mm 1.4. Those two stops make a hell of a difference in shutter speed. Of course, had I grabbed that lens, I probably wouldn't be writing about the lens now. We all ready know what a fantastic lens that is.

Final impressions. I was pretty ho hum about the lens on my way home. It performed fine, but I shoot in extremes. Fine doesn't cut it. Next day I uploaded my shots, and went to work in Photoshop Turns out, for the conditions, they came out pretty great. The lens is sharp as my zooms that cost wayyyyyy more. The auto-focus definitely takes its time more than my L glass, but it is super smooth. It doesn't jump around. I was really skeptical of the fly by wire manual focus offered by the stm motor, but in reality, it worked extremely well. I found the focus to be far smoother than on my 50mm 1.4 and easier to control. Color and contrast ... OK, I can't judge that at all. The light sucked. The color sucked. Not the lenses fault. When you think about it, this lens costs $200. If I was between the 50mm 1.8 and the 40mm, I would take the 40mm no questions. Better build quality, faster AF, and sharper, all in a smaller package! This lens made my camera so small! I could easily see myself leaving my G12 at home to casually take pictures of my daily adventures.

That means I haven't been shooting anything new, so what am I to I do? Edit old projects. Actually, I re-edit old shots in preparation for editing a major project. I am going to in the near future begin putting my project "Unknown" into its book form. Something I have been meaning to do for a year or so now. Unfortunately dealing with 50,000 + images from a period spanning 4 years and 75+ underground punk rock shows is somewhat daunting. As a warm up, I am editing all the shows I photographed at the Showcase Theater in Corona into a small book for myself. Of course, if anyone wants a copy of it, it will be made public. Gotta love self publishing.

These shots are from the Millions of Dead Cops show at Showcase in February 2008.
I should mention that none of the bands above is actually M.D.C., they are the Resistance Culture, Subhumans, and the Voids.

My love of black and white photography continues to grow. I convert almost everything to BW now just for kicks. BW is gorgous (I plan on shooting a BW/transparency film project starting this winter). One more step removed from reality, it becomes completely about tones and the image. The photographs become simpler and focused. Somehow emotion comes through so clearly, color versions of these almost get in the way of themselves. Completely contemporary yet vintage (Yes, BW is actually vintage!) inspired. I really love the way digital black and white looks out of the 5D.

Sorry about the watermarks, I compeltely agree that they are incredibly distracting, but whatcha gonna do? If someone steals my shit (and yes people steal my shit) at least I'll get some credit.JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125810004364865239.post-65289553641473019132012-09-13T14:33:00.000-07:002012-09-13T14:33:04.322-07:00TennesseeAs the title of this blog hints, I will be showing the remainder of my trip cross country in this blog, but first some news.

I just updated my site www.JamesAndrewPhotography.com. I removed my weddings album and added the album "Main St Orange County. It is short for the full title of "Santa Ana: Main street Orange County". Unfortunately, too many letters for my site. Owell. It looks good!
I also have separated my consumer work from my personal work. You can find my consumer work now at www.JamesARidley.wix.com/JamesAndrewPortraits. Yes, that is a little long of a URL and it does host some advertising on it, but hey, its separate, and it works great with my budget. I still have the portfolio "fashionable Portraits" on my personal work site, as this body of work is a mixture of both ... so it will occupy the slot that it is currently in for the time being. That may or may not change.

I am not finished updating JamesAndrewPhotography nor am I finished building JamesAndrewPortraits just yet. They are both work in progresses, as it tends to be. So stay tuned, and check back in and see what I have done.
From Louisiana we drove North along highway 61. We made a point to take a smaller highway. Hell, we made a point of taking smaller highways for as much of the trip as we could afford to! I would have loved to take side streets the whole trip, but that would have taken a bit too long. You just see so much more when you get off the interstate!
One of two plantations we visited. We wanted to take a historical tour of a plantation while we were in Mississippi, it didn't work. We got a tour alright, but it wasn't very historical. Built by rich white people 200 years ago, and still used by rich white people today. The slaves quarters are a bed and breakfast! The tunnels used by the slaves to get to the main house are used as storage! Jeez, talk abut pretending like nothing bad ever happened.
Elvis's grave in Memphis. The tour of Grace land is way too expensive for people on a budget, so we went to the early morning grave visit. They let you in to the graves site for free between 7 and 9am!

Memphis was a very interesting city, its a mixture of post industrial city still dealing with white flight and economic down turn. At the same time there is a bit of a resurgence in the downtown area, not just in the touristy section on Beale St, but all over. It feels like a city that nearly hit bottom but has managed to pull its self up a bit and is slowly rebuilding itself.

Following Memphis we drove East to Nashville, explored Nashville for an evening. Another city we may want to visit again, and after that, it was pretty much straight through to NYC. We had met our budget, and it was now down pouring on us. It proceeded to down pour from Memphis all the way to NYC. No fun. No fun at all. The rest of the trip was super fun though. I would do it again in a heart beat.
Welcome to Louisiana. No joke.

From Austin we drove East on the 10, went arouuuund Houston and kept on going. Louisiana was only a few short hours east. Louisiana is absolutely gorgeous. The bayou was something new all together. A place unique as the redwoods are in California. The city of New Orleans was one of the most interesting cities I have ever visited. It is tops on my list to go back to and explore. An afternoon is not enough time. A week may be enough time to get the basics down, a month would be more like it. The unique mix of history, architecture, and mash ups of people and cultures make this city someplace to want to get to know, for better or for worse.
I really wish we could have spent more time in New Orleans. What a fascinating city. Unfortunately all we had time for was a drive through the city streets and then an afternoon and evening in the French Quarter.

The juju is strong here. Everyplace on Earth has an essence to it, and if you are tuned into it, you can feel it. New Orleans felt like no place else. If you visit the quarter, I absolutely recommend the voodoo museum. We also took a haunted history tour which was really neat too.
I walked to the shore of a swamp near Baton Rouge, and I was greeted by this lil guy. He wasn't so little either. Probably more like eight feet little.
What a state! Like I've already emphasized I really loved New Orleans. I really liked Louisiana. Next time we will have to spend more time in New Orleans as well as exploring the northern part of the state. Oh right ... cross country ... last time I got us all the way through New Mexico. Where does that leave us for this post? Oh right, TEXAS. Texas is its own country, half our trip was driving through Texas. Ok, that is a little bit of an exaggeration, but it certainly felt like that. We finished New Mexico with Roswell and drove directly East on some highway who's particular number I forget. Our first destination was the Fort Worth / Dallas area where we had some friends to stay with. We only spent an afternoon in Fort Worth, but it was definitely TEXAS. Belt buckles, steak, cowboy boots and ... and well ... cows. We decided our sole destination within Fort Worth would be the Old Stockades. Did not disappoint. It provided for some fantastic photo opportunities and some new sites. We did not try the steak. I sort of regret that.
I don't think it gets much more Texas than this shot.

After Fort Worth we were off to the Peoples Republic of Austin. I really have to take a moment to mention that this was really a miserable drive. Texans drive a lot like Californians, except their highways are only 2 lanes, and they have a tendency to drive over sized diesel trucks that are lifted as if they are mud trucks. They also like to do what I coined "The Texas Ass Ride". Not so fun at 75mph, and yes, that name was meant to be ironic.

Anyways. Austin is awesome, ok, Austin was overrated, but I still found it awesome. I don't know. I guess my expectations of Austin were just too high. I doubt its really the live music capital of the world, but it might just be the bar capital of the world. Holy crap they have a lot of bars, and each one has live music! I have a feeling we missed Austin's awesome peak by a decade or two. However. I really did dig a lot of the people that we met there. I also really loved the outdoors activities in Austin. Barton Spring is amazing. Red Bud Island along the Colorado is great. Loved swimming there hanging out with the locals. We had great food in Austin, and definitely had some good beer.

Alright, let us follow this up with some touristy pictures taken by a tourist, aka me.
The Texas state capitol. How did Austin get so liberal while being the Texas state capitol?! I will never know. Rick Perry must live beyond the city limits.

Anyways, that is it for tonight. I have at least two more parts to this cross country extravaganza. Is this all filler to fill in until I start shooting a brand new project here in NYC?! Kinda!! JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125810004364865239.post-32575641801733043112012-08-12T10:15:00.002-07:002012-08-12T10:15:34.670-07:00Cross Country Part 1I have been living in NYC now for a little over two months. We left California May 1st, and arrived in Long Island on the 15th. We found jobs, and found an apartment we could actually afford in Manhattan. Not that we are in a hip and cool part of the city, but its the same size as our old apartment in Long Beach! We sold the car, so we are stuck here.

Driving cross country was an amazing experience. It is something that I feel everyone should do at some point in their lives. It is part of growing up in the United States. It is a must do.

We drove through the southern part of the states, and we visted a lot of cities and towns along the way. Tuscon, Tombstone, Las Cruces, Roswell, Fort Worth, Austin, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Memphis, and Nashville were all major stops for us. I took well over two thousand photos, and so did she. We have had a lot to go through!

I am getting a little angsty, so I am going to skip the writing and go straight to some photos. Actually, I think I am just hungry. Pizza time. Brb. Alright, three pieces later, I am a happier camper. I think its time to post some pics and go wander around town.
Leaving California we had to make a stopover at Slab City and Salvation Mountain. The rumors are true, Lenard Knight is now in a home. There is a co-op of people from Slab City that are maintaining his mountain. I wish Lenard the best, he is a truly special man with a lot of love in his heart.

Roswell New Mexico. Odd little town. I highly recommend eating at the Cowboy Cafe, and partaking in every single cheesy alien thing you can find. When else in your life will you do that again? Never. Unless you go back to Roswell ...
I simply added the "Fashionable Portraits" portfolio onto it. Really, most of these photos have been on my site in some form or another. They occupy an awkward middle ground. All of these shots were created for the purpose of being something or another, whether that something or another was for use in a models portfolio as head shots, or the hair stylist portfolio for their use or maybe just a school project. Often times they were created simply for my portfolio for an opportunity to play with light and a new model. I don't feel comfortable calling them fashion photography or portrait work. They are not quite personal work, nor are they strictly commercial work. The middle ground that they occupy is both less than more than their sums. Awkward.

Anyways. I have been going through the thousand or so photos I took while traveling cross country. Wow. It was a really amazing trip. Hopefully soon I will have the time to really look at them. Right now I am incredibly busy finding an apartment as well as a new job. Jobs are important, so are homes. I would like both please.
It only took me a few minutes to fumble through and re-discover how to post a blog.

Enough of that eh? Ok, I just got to New York! Tomorrow will be my first time in the city. For now I am staying in a suburb on Long Island. I am hoping to have an apartment by the 1st of June. Until then, I am posting everything from my really slow and under powered lap top. Editing truly is a task on this thing. We will see what I can make happen.

Drove cross country, took the scenic route for as much of it as I could afford. My route was San Diego to Tuscon, to Alamogorod NM, to Roswell NM, to Fort Worth TX to Austin TX to Lafyette LA to New Orleans LA to Baton Rouge LA to Memphis TN to Nashville TN and then it was a pretty crooked shot to NYC. I tried to avoid the interstates as much as possible except at the end when time finally really mattered. I will post more on this later.JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125810004364865239.post-15099136330924900132012-03-17T22:14:00.000-07:002012-03-17T22:14:25.330-07:00A bit of minor news. I am moving to NYC in a month and a half! OK, I won't actually be there until mid May, but I am leaving California on May 1st. Exciting stuff. I am going to be driving cross country, through the southern states and then up the East Coast. Expect a lot of photos from that! In the mean time, I am incredibly busy with getting stuff in order.

In other minor news. I finished putting Santa Ana into a portfolio. http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3057018 You can purchase a copy for yourself through Blurb. A little pricey, but it looks pretty awesome. I will potentially update it at some point with an essay of some kind, but for now its mostly photos with a tiny bit of writing. It looks pretty amazing in person.

These are a few shots from the Hickey Underworld. A small part but extremely important part of my project "Unknown". The Hickey was a punk house in Long Beach. It was off Magnolia and Anaheim, and once a month they would host a mixture of local and touring bands. Some of the shows got pretty ridiculous. These four shots came from the show where Andrew Jackson Jihad headlined. The place had to have a couple hundred kids there. The police broke the show up at 10, but a lucky few dozen got ushered into the house. After the police left, Andrew Jackson played and it was ridiculous. These shots were before all that, during the opening acts.
The house itself was an unassuming home. On a regular night you would have no idea what kinda shit was going down. On party nights, there would be kids spilling out of the house all over the patio. Bicycles chained to the fences. 40ozs on the lawn.
After a few shows they started charging a few bucks at the door. All of the money went to the touring bands, and to fix the occasional broken window.
The Hickey Underworld attracted one of the best crowds of any show that I have been to. Nearly everyone was there to have fun. I don't remember anyone starting fights. I only remember everyone having way too much fun.
Thanks for reading!JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125810004364865239.post-32005011169488880852012-02-24T13:20:00.000-08:002012-02-24T13:20:34.835-08:00VegasThis blog is going to be a little bit different, the pictures within are not part of any project that I have been working on for months or anything like that. They are simply some pictures I took over the weekend. I went to Vegas to visit my family, and of course I did a few things outside of that. Not to worry, I am not sharing any photos of my family.

These first few pics you may already be familiar with. The neon museum of Vegas, also known as the Bone Yard. Its the place all good Las Vegas signs go to rest. The museum is pretty amazing. Right now it is halfway between being a museum and a yard filled with old signs. It is a work in progress. I highly recommend taking the tour. They are fifteen bucks a person and you need to book it a couple of weeks ahead of time. They may be able to squeeze in a couple of people on the day of, but it's not very good odds. The tour takes about an hour and you can wander a bit as long as you are within eye site of the tour guide. You will learn a lot of Vegas history and of course the history of the Bone Yard and the signs themselves.
One of the coolest things about the museum is that they book photo shoots just about every day of the week. Prices start at about $150 an hour. If you are shooting a wedding in Vegas, this is definitely something to think about for some extra bride and groom action. You can bring in strobes and an assistant. I didn't ask if they have power in the yard, so bring a battery pack. Shooting fashion here would be a lot of fun too, but most of the signs are pretty fragile, so you will be limited on how interactive your model can be with the signs. You can drive 2 and a half hours to the Salton Sea for backdrops, why not add an hour more and go to Vegas.

Another great thing about the Bone Yard is that it is a non profit. Everything it makes goes right back into it. Currently they are really working at building a legit museum. Check out these satellite shots I stole:
The first one is off of Bing, and you can tell its a little bit older. The Bone Yard is still in its original location at the North Side of the property, the park hasn't been built yet, and the museum has not begun construction. The 2nd grab is off of Google and shows the museum how it currently looks now. Pretty cool. I look forward to visiting it again when it is finished. Will it ever be finished? www.neonmuseum.org
The next day I checked out the Burlesque Hall of Fame in downtown Las Vegas. Located right on Freemont St between Las Vegas Blvd and 6th. I walked right by it the first time around. They don't have a sign, but they are in same building as a ton of art galleries and a cafe. If you are looking for something to do in Vegas and are not quite the gambling type, check this place out! The Hall of Fame is really small, two rooms small. There is a donation to enter, but just like the Neon Museum, the Hall of Fame is a non profit. Everything goes back into it. You are going to spend five bucks on your next drink, why not give the Hall of Fame five bucks too. I honestly was a bit disappointed with the content. I wanted more! Its really only a fifteen minute trip or so. The shop was pretty tiny too. Come on guys, get some books and movies in there! There are a bunch out there that you can carry! I hope the Hall of Fame is successful and able to grow in the future. I may be coming back in June, they will be having a weekend of burlesque. June 2nd through the 5th.

Leaving Vegas Monday morning can suck. Especially if the 15 is busy, and it was. I gave traffic the finger, and pulled off the highway at Nipton road. Screw the LA drivers that want to go a hundred, I am taking my time through the desert. I took the backwoods way home, through the Mojave National Preserve, South to Route 66, Amboy Road, and finally Joshua Tree.
I really can not resist stopping out old houses. I've explored dozens of them at this point, and I am not getting tired of them. Watch where you step. No one likes to fall through the floor, step on a nail, or wake up a sleeping hobo.
This was the wall paper in one of the rooms. Lil kids room from the fifties I am guessing. Starkly beautiful. I love finding this kind of thing. Just thinking about the people that used to call this house their home.
Heading along Route 66 into Amboy I drove right passed this mass of something. I had no idea what I had just seen. I turned the car around and drove past it again. Shoes?! Piles of shoes?!! I parked and wandered over to take a look. A short while later I was at home researching the Amboy Shoe Tree. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkKAd9rjfac . Turns out, it even has it's own wiki page and a number of you tube videos. It used to be a real tree. Looks like the weight of the all the shoes slowly brought it down. Many of the shoes were dated 2012. Doesn't look like the tree collapsing upon itself is keeping people from tossing their old shoes onto it. I didn't have an extra pair to add to the collection.
The only gas for miles. Inside the gas station you will find a small collection of souvenirs. A restaurant that I am not really sure if they ever serve food anymore, and a small convenience store. I loved some of the post cards they had, I didn't leave with any, but I appreciated them. I did leave with a Route 66 Root Beer, and it was really good. I don't think I will ever get tired of exploring the back roads of America. There is far too much good stuff out there to see.JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6125810004364865239.post-87127772193243217122012-02-17T22:30:00.000-08:002012-02-17T22:30:15.593-08:00Boozy FloozyTonight I am going to share, or possibly re-share (depending on how far back in my blog you have gone) a few images from my series "Boozy Floozy". As you may or may not know, Boozy Floozy is a series I shot documenting the Boozy Floozy Burlesque Troupe of Orange County. I followed them around for a year, shooting just about every show they did, backstage and on. Shooting these girls was an incredible privilege. They are amazing, and I hope that you can appreciate them from just the photographs!

I suppose this falls into the realm of cliche girls pictures but I can't help myself with it. I completely expect this type of image from this series, and this one completely fulfills my wishes for it to exist within the series.

Simone Danalustrous's fan dance. When I think of iconic images of a Vegas showgirl, this is one of the images that comes up. The light was perfect on her, and you can barely tell the file is an underexposed 3200 ISO shot (honestly, all of these are). I am a huge sucker for large amounts of negative space. Throughout the series, I use shots like this as the "candy". The images that you really just can't help but want to look at.

The Balloon Pop. She starts out with lots of balloons, ends up with none. What is under the balloons? Please. You know what's under the balloons. Bella would fill the balloons with glitter so that with every pop she would shimmer. With this photograph I got the main light perfectly back lighting the glitter as one of her balloons bursts. This was a shot that I overlooked at first, but I found myself coming back to recently. Every night that I shot this dance, I would try to get the moment the balloon popped. This was a far better image than I was hoping for.

Hands are amazing, they tell can tell us everything.I love her chipped fake nails and bandaged finger. Her hands don't look like the delicate female hands that we would like to imagine.

Just in case you are wondering. I am in the process of self publishing this series as a book. I am going to take a huge risk and go out and say that I am aiming for May for it to be finished. Crap. Now I really have to finish it by then!JamesAndrewPhotographyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321854907586593187noreply@blogger.com0
